The sub-genre of this film is alien invasion and we can tell this by what this movie is based around. The narrative is based around an alien invasion where the main character Captain Steven Hiller (played by Will Smith) fights off the aliens where towards the end they blow up the mothership. This is quite a common theme within many sci-fi movies where there is a Good vs Evil. We can also tell this is a science fiction film due to the mise-en-scene.
